This professor is known for a strategy called\u00a0<strong>\u00ab\u00a0Blue ocean\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong>. Blue, because he envisions a business strategy that\u00a0<strong>gets rid of competitors<\/strong>\u00a0to focus on\u00a0<strong>niche<\/strong>\u00a0markets and\u00a0<strong>customer<\/strong>\u00a0experience. Ocean,\u00a0<em>\u00ab\u00a0because it&rsquo;s not a blue pond, you need to think big of course!\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Malaysian Innovation Ecosystem: Stats on startups and SMEs<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>startup failure rate in the OECD is 48% on average, versus 60% in Malaysia<\/strong>. Improving that by just a bit will generate millions for Malaysia. Malaysian SMEs could also do better. They occupy 56.4% of the workforce (77% in OECD countries), but account for only 32.7% of GDP (54% in OECD countries). Productivity must be raised, and innovation is a key driver. This is where the boss has\u00a0<strong>animal<\/strong>\u00a0instincts. He learns from trial and error, and fights against an ever-standing and renewing\u00a0<strong>competition<\/strong>. Napster or Segway are prime examples: strong innovation, huge buzz, even a huge user base\/funding, but eventual failure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blue ocean innovation<\/strong>. Entrepreneurs can be\u00a0<strong>educated<\/strong>, and provided they have the right methodologies and tools, they can\u00a0<strong>minimize failure.<\/strong>\u00a0Innovation is driven by the consumer and the demand, rather than supply-side.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A good example of Blue ocean in practice is the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dollarshaveclub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dollar Shave Club<\/a>. Traditionally, the\u00a0<strong>shavers<\/strong>\u00a0market is a red ocean, tainted by the blood of ferocious competition. What&rsquo;s more, the\u00a0<strong>consumer is screwed<\/strong>: he either pays a lot for a highly qualitative shaver, or he pays almost nothing but gets cuts, bumps and wounds every time he shaves.<\/p>\n<p>Dollar Shave Club applied the\u00a0<strong>3-tier non-customer analysis<\/strong>\u00a0to get out of the red ocean and to think out of the box: \u00ab\u00a0what do customers want to buy\u00a0\u00bb. They focused on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>soon-to-be non-customers (dissatisfied razors users)<\/li>\n<li>refusing customers (dry shave users)<\/li>\n<li>unexplored non-customers (occasional shavers, barber shop goers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe title=\"DollarShaveClub.com - Our Blades Are F***ing Great\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZUG9qYTJMsI?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0<strong>zero marketing, a viral video and a community with access to social media<\/strong>, a new pricing plan of $1\/month and punctual home delivery, Dollar Shave Club answered many unaddressed needs of the shavers.\u00a0<strong>ROI of Dollar Shave Club: 10M video views, $1.1 million monthly sales, 62% gross profit margin, and even 10.9M Silicon Valley funding !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>Malaysia<\/strong>, the Blue ocean strategy has also had success, with\u00a0<strong>AirAsia <\/strong>being a great example.\u00a0The newly opened\u00a0<em>\u00ab\u00a05 star quality, 1 star price\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>\u00a0hotel chain, Tune hotel, offers a <strong>one<\/strong><strong>\u00a0night stay for RM 9.99 (about $2).\u00a0<\/strong>It consists of\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>clean<\/strong>\u00a0room, security and nothing else. <strong>Epal sewing school<\/strong>, a social venture from Malaysia, also used the same strategy to answer womens&rsquo; needs to master sewing.
