Let&rsquo;s dive first into some stats &amp; insights about Bangladesh itself.<\/p>\n<p>The founder of the project, Mustafiz (follow his <a title=\"Mustafiz Startup Dhaka\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/startupdak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>), explains his <strong>pitch<\/strong> in this short video, which also helped them to run an<a title=\"Startup Dhaka Indiegogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/startup-dhaka-a-documentary-about-startup-community-in-dhaka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Indiegogo campaign<\/a> to get the $9000 they needed:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kG1WRrO4HpY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Bangladesh: welcome to the 7th largest country in the world<\/h2>\n<p>As you know if you follow us, we&rsquo;re fond of unveiling how BIG and juicy the emerging markets can be, and sometimes, data is a first good point of entry to understand the scale of our topic:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bangladesh is the<strong> 7th largest country<\/strong> in the world, with <strong>165m population<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>60% of the population is below 30, and <strong>34% below 15<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>72% of the population lives in rural areas<\/strong> (India has 68%, for comparison)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internet<\/strong> users account for <strong>18% of the population<\/strong> (94% of which through mobile). 20% has no access to any media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DH-gdp-forecast-growth-south-asia-bangladesh-india-pakistan-2014-2015-2016-startup-dhaka-documentary-innovation-is-everywhere-startup-movies-martin-pasquier-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-912\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DH-gdp-forecast-growth-south-asia-bangladesh-india-pakistan-2014-2015-2016-startup-dhaka-documentary-innovation-is-everywhere-startup-movies-martin-pasquier-3.jpg\" alt=\"DH gdp forecast growth south asia bangladesh india pakistan 2014 2015 2016 startup dhaka documentary innovation is everywhere startup movies martin pasquier\" width=\"640\" height=\"441\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Economically,<strong> statistics are average<\/strong>, as for most of the large developing countries, 6% is a \u00ab\u00a0normal\u00a0\u00bb rate, but <strong>7.5 to 8% is actually needed to turn a significant share of the population into middle-class.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bangladesh <strong>exports a lot of garments and clothes<\/strong> (second largest after China), but more complex safety rules will make it harder for the country to rely on this. <strong>Remittances<\/strong> account for 12% (and growing) of the GDP, as many young males are employed as workers in construction in the Emirates and South-East Asia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Startup Dhaka: a guided tour of Bangladesh startup scene<\/h2>\n<p>With this backdrop in mind, and fast-growing urban population, <strong>there are lots to do as an entrepreneur in Dhaka<\/strong>, and as in many emerging markets, most of the founding fathers of the ecosystem are <strong>diasporans<\/strong> back from Canada, the US, or other countries they have been to, and where they got an exposure to startups.<\/p>\n<p>One of the interviewees, Nash Islam, says he went to <strong>Silicon Valley<\/strong> in 2009, <em>\u00ab\u00a0and always wanted to come back\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>. He has now a startup monetising content on the web.\u00a0Another one, Amar Makon (from <a title=\"Loosemonkies Bangladesh job portal\" href=\"http:\/\/bd.loosemonkies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loosemonkies<\/a>, find jobs intelligently) was in <strong>Canada<\/strong>, and he came back to Dhaka <em>\u00ab\u00a0every 6 to 8 weeks to assess the evolution of the community.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We found the <a title=\"Iran diaspora startup entrepreneurs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/iran-take-advantage-of-persian-diaspora-become-startup-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">same interest of the diaspora in Iran<\/a>, a country somehow similar in terms of opportunities (similar market size and similar state of the startup scene)<\/p>\n<p>As a very young country in terms of startup advancement, all is to be done, with <em><strong>\u00ab\u00a0no support mechanism, no incubator, no Techcrunch, no YC Combinators&#8230;<\/strong> entrepreneurs are the same everywhere, but the infrastructure in Bangladesh is definitely not the same\u00a0\u00bb.<\/em> Many interviewees stress the fact that a lot of what happens in Bangladesh is still offline, from networking to advertising.<\/p>\n<p>We&rsquo;ve noted <strong>a few startups with strong local anchor in Bangladesh<\/strong> during the movie, including:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a
