{"id":836,"date":"2014-07-25T17:11:28","date_gmt":"2014-07-25T09:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/?p=836"},"modified":"2014-07-25T17:11:28","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T09:11:28","slug":"brics-series-4-picooc-internet-things-made-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innovationiseverywhere.com\/fr\/brics-series-4-picooc-internet-things-made-china\/","title":{"rendered":"BRICS series #4: Picooc, the internet of things made in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, we took you successively to Brazil, Russia, and India. the \u00ab\u00a0C\u00a0\u00bb of the BRICS countries is <strong>China<\/strong>, and we&rsquo;ll see today how <strong><a title=\"Picooc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.picooc.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Picooc<\/a><\/strong> is a startup to follow as it&rsquo;s both successful, funded, and very Chinese.\u00a0But let&rsquo;s go back for a moment\u00a0to a broader review of China as an emerging market for technology ventures.<\/p>\n<h2>China and the BRICS countries: first among its peers<\/h2>\n<p>As we celebrate in this month of July 2014 the 6th BRICS summit,\u00a0it is clearer that <strong>China is the dominant country of the group<\/strong>. As the <a title=\"China BRICS \" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/how-brics-new-development-bank-serves-chinas-interest-1631664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Business Times<\/a> states, <em>\u00ab\u00a0China is the world\u2019s second-largest economy and has <strong>a larger GDP than the other four BRICS combined.<\/strong> It is, for example, 17 times larger than South Africa, the smallest member, which joined at China\u2019s behest in 2010. And, in the years since O\u2019Neill lumped China with the others, this gap has widened even more: <strong>China accounted for 40 percent of all global growth in the five years following the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.<\/strong> China looms so large that it is the largest trading partner of the other four members, but none of the four even rank in China\u2019s top five.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/6th-brics-summit-fortaleza-china-brazil-russia-india-south-africa-startups-BRICS-picooc-latin-smart-body-scale-internet-of-things-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-838\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/6th-brics-summit-fortaleza-china-brazil-russia-india-south-africa-startups-BRICS-picooc-latin-smart-body-scale-internet-of-things-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-3.jpg\" alt=\"6th-brics-summit-fortaleza china brazil russia india south africa startups BRICS picooc latin smart body scale internet of things innovation is everywhere martin pasquier\" width=\"640\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the summit, the BRICS agreed to create an emerging market pendant to the World Bank, called the <strong>New Development Bank<\/strong>. It will foster infrastructure and development projects for developing countries. Being based in Shanghai, with China making a bigger contribution to its funds and its reserve, it is pretty clear who will held the helm.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of internal growth, China&rsquo;s stats are simply amazing.\u00a0If you remember <a title=\"India startup\" href=\"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/brics-series-3-book-my-show-leads-indias-ticketing-frenzy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our focus on India<\/a>, we saw that the middle-class had grown from 50m in 2007 to 250m today, with forecasts of 600m by 2030. In <strong>China<\/strong>, it&rsquo;s probably even more brutal, fast, and big. <strong>As of 2000, just 4% of Chinese households could be considered middle-class, and it was already 68% in 2012<\/strong>. By 2025, 75% of China should be in the middle-class. But there&rsquo;s more: Chinese consumers will also be in their vast majority <strong>upper-middle-class consumers<\/strong>, with a potential spending power not comparable to any of the other BRICS (<a title=\"China middle-class forecast \" href=\"http:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/insights\/consumer_and_retail\/mapping_chinas_middle_class\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McKinsey<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/china-middle-class-forecast-startup-BRICS-countries-brazil-india-south-africa-russia-picooc-latin-smart-scale-internet-of-things-hardware-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-3.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-839\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/china-middle-class-forecast-startup-BRICS-countries-brazil-india-south-africa-russia-picooc-latin-smart-scale-internet-of-things-hardware-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-3.gif\" alt=\"china middle class forecast startup BRICS countries brazil india south africa russia picooc latin smart scale internet of things hardware innovation is everywhere martin pasquier\" width=\"264\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there will be a lot of challenges along the road, from environmental and political pressure to a demographic forecast all but positive. Still, let&rsquo;s enjoy this amazing moment : )<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>China&rsquo;s startup scene today<\/h2>\n<p>Our of\u00a01.3 billion Chinese today, <strong>84 percent of have cell phones and half have mobile Internet access<\/strong>. These connected users are among the most active for e-commerce, social networks and online gaming. Overall, internet users in China spend an average <strong>25h per week online<\/strong>, and there are about <strong>300m registered e-commerce shoppers<\/strong> as well. A few ones you could check out to better understand the ecosystem are <a title=\"Chinaccelerator\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chinaccelerator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinaccelerator<\/a>, <a title=\"Haxlr8r\" href=\"http:\/\/haxlr8r.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HAXL8R8<\/a>, and in a country as wide as China, cities also begin to differentiate themselves. <a title=\"Shenzhen startup scene China\" href=\"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/shenzhen-startup-scene-welcome-world-capital-makers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shenzhen, on the southern &lsquo;border&rsquo; with Hong-Kong, is now reputed for its hardware startups scene<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ecosystem is now reaching another stage with <strong>giant e-commerce platform Alibaba poised to be one of the biggest IPO in the world<\/strong> by September. We can expect a lot of the new millionaires of the group will continue to foster the startup scene through funding and mentoring.<\/p>\n<h2>Picooc, the internet of things made in China<\/h2>\n<p>In this fast-moving and huge scene, we chose to talk about <strong>Picooc<\/strong>, a startup in the <strong>internet of things<\/strong> field. Picooc recently got a <strong>$21m round of funding<\/strong> from local investors (<a title=\"Picooc funding\" href=\"http:\/\/www.techinasia.com\/china-picooc-internet-of-things-startup-gets-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TechinAsia<\/a>). Hardware is still done cheaper &#8211; and now better &#8211; in China, and trends show that beyond mobile, social and e-commerce platforms, <strong>China could lead the way globally for connected objects.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/gsma-internet-of-things-forecast-2020-connected-objects-machine-to-machine-china-picooc-innovation-is-everywhere-BRICS-startups-martin-pasquier-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-841\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/gsma-internet-of-things-forecast-2020-connected-objects-machine-to-machine-china-picooc-innovation-is-everywhere-BRICS-startups-martin-pasquier-3.jpg\" alt=\"gsma internet of things forecast 2020 connected objects machine to machine china picooc innovation is everywhere BRICS startups martin pasquier\" width=\"640\" height=\"452\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to <a title=\"China internet of things GSMA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gsma.com\/newsroom\/china-leads-global-m2m-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GSMA<\/a>, an association of telecom operators and manufacturers, <strong>China accounts for an already astounding 25% of the \u00ab\u00a0m2m\u00a0\u00bb market, for machine to machine and the internet of things<\/strong>. The Chinese government is also expected to support strongly this trend with <strong>$600bn of investment and infrastructure by 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Picooc-Latin-smart-body-scale-withings-fitbit-china-internet-of-things-startup-BRICS-countries-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-842\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Picooc-Latin-smart-body-scale-withings-fitbit-china-internet-of-things-startup-BRICS-countries-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-3.jpg\" alt=\"Picooc Latin smart body scale withings fitbit china internet of things startup BRICS countries innovation is everywhere martin pasquier\" width=\"550\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Picooc is offering a simple product: <strong>a smart body scale<\/strong>. The latest model, called Latin, allows anyone to <strong>track health data<\/strong>. It comes with a dedicated smartphone app which allows its users to record, analyse and compare with friends their <strong>weight<\/strong>, and important metrics like <strong>body fat, body mass index, body water, and muscle mass.<\/strong> The app makes it a fitness-tracking experience that complements wearable tech gadgets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Picooc-Latin-smart-body-scale-withings-fitbit-china-internet-of-things-startup-BRICS-countries-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-2-3.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-844\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Picooc-Latin-smart-body-scale-withings-fitbit-china-internet-of-things-startup-BRICS-countries-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-2-3.png\" alt=\"Picooc Latin smart body scale withings fitbit china internet of things startup BRICS countries innovation is everywhere martin pasquier 2\" width=\"640\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a way, Picooc is <strong>a truly Chinese startup:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First because it&rsquo;s <strong>an obvious copycat<\/strong> of other smart scales released earlier, such as Withing&rsquo;s one or Fitbit&rsquo;s Aria. There&rsquo;s nothing wrong with copycats, they rather show the complexity for incumbents to go to emerging markets.<\/li>\n<li>Then, Picooc is <strong>aggressive on the price<\/strong>, with $72 per unit, its competitors are twice or three times more expensive. Pricing counts in China, even though one could also play with higher prices for branding purposes (see Apple).<\/li>\n<li>Last but not least, Picooc is <strong>an interesting product of the China startup ecosystem<\/strong>. Two of its recent funders include <strong>JD.Com<\/strong>, China&rsquo;s biggest online mall, and <strong>Tencent<\/strong>, the social media giant which owns WeChat, the world&rsquo;s leading messaging platform. Interestingly, you can buy Picooc online through both brands&rsquo; e-stores.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All in all, Picooc&rsquo;s story is both a good excuse to share a few insights and data on China as a technology hub, and we hope you enjoyed meeting with yet another BRICS and how these key markets of the emerging world run their own startup ecosystems, with already convincing success stories.<\/p>\n<h2>More startups from the BRICS!<\/h2>\n<p>Tomorrow, we&rsquo;ll see how<strong> South Africa<\/strong>, the smallest and most recent \u00ab\u00a0bric of the BRICS\u00a0\u00bb is faring.
