{"id":784,"date":"2014-07-22T17:39:19","date_gmt":"2014-07-22T09:39:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/?p=784"},"modified":"2014-07-22T17:39:19","modified_gmt":"2014-07-22T09:39:19","slug":"brics-series-1-brazils-hotel-urbano-dominates-online-hospitality-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innovationiseverywhere.com\/fr\/brics-series-1-brazils-hotel-urbano-dominates-online-hospitality-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"BRICS series #1: how Brazil&#039;s Hotel Urbano dominates the online hospitality industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>6th BRICS summit<\/strong> has closed its doors last week, so we feel it is a good timing to <strong>showcase a few big startups from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa<\/strong>, and we&rsquo;ll start with Brazil&rsquo;s <a title=\"Hotel Urbano Brazil \" href=\"hotelurbano.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hotel Urbano<\/a>.\u00a0The 5 countries were actually four when the concept of BRIC (minus South Africa) was coined back in 2001 by a British economist, to symbolise <strong>the shift of economic power between a declining (or flat, at least) West and fast-growing emerging markets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brazil-middle-class-growth-innovation-is-everywhere-hotel-urbano-startup-BRICS-countries-emerging-markets-tourism-hospitality-e-commerce-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-788\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brazil-middle-class-growth-innovation-is-everywhere-hotel-urbano-startup-BRICS-countries-emerging-markets-tourism-hospitality-e-commerce-3.jpg\" alt=\"brazil middle-class growth innovation is everywhere hotel urbano startup BRICS countries emerging markets tourism hospitality e-commerce\" width=\"480\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since 2009, the BRIC officially hold <strong>a yearly summit<\/strong> where they discuss strategy, economic policies. In 2010, they integrated South Africa in their group. The BRICS could probably be better called BRICSMI by adding countries such as Mexico or Indonesia, both\u00a0similar to South Africa in terms of GDP per capita, and way bigger in terms of market size. Anyway, this year, <strong>the BRICS summit launched a common initiative with a <a title=\"New Development Bank BRICS\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/op-edge\/174344-ten-outcomes-brics-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Development Bank<\/a> <\/strong>with a dotation of $100bn, based in Shanghai, to work mostly on infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p>If the solemnity and high level of the summit puts forwards politicians and corporates, we can here discuss a bit more of<strong> their startup scenes<\/strong>, as we plan to visit these countries during our <a title=\"Innovation is Everywhere world tour\" href=\"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/world-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world tour<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n<p>All these countries have <strong>local success stories<\/strong> when it comes to startups and most of the ones we&rsquo;ll be discussing this week are\u00a0expanding regionally, which makes them even more interesting<\/p>\n<h2>Hotel Urbano,\u00a0from Brazil to Latin America, a marketplace\u00a0for an expected tourist boom<\/h2>\n<p>With both the <strong>2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Rio<\/strong>, Brazil is bound to attract more tourists this decade. So far, the figures are still <strong>a disappointing 5m\/year<\/strong>, pretty low when in comparison, <a title=\"Mexico tourism stats\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2012\/oct\/11\/business\/la-fi-mexico-tourism-20121011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico attracted about 24m tourists in 2012<\/a> (with huge increases from Russia, Venezuela, and&#8230; Brazil). With the two biggest sports events, a noted amelioration of safety conditions and more infrastructure, Brazil is improving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Brazil-middle-class-hotel-urbano-BRICS-startups-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-1-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-789\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Brazil-middle-class-hotel-urbano-BRICS-startups-innovation-is-everywhere-martin-pasquier-1-3.jpg\" alt=\"Redefining Brazil's Emerging Middle Class: How to Prepare for th\" width=\"460\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More importantly, <strong>the middle-class is growing fast<\/strong>, with 20m more Brazilians entering it over the past decade. They now account for <strong>50% of the population<\/strong>, a figure which is way higher than in China or India. As this graphic from the <a title=\"Brazil emerging middle-class consumption pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bcgperspectives.com\/content\/articles\/center_consumer_customer_insight_globalization_redefining_brazils_emerging_middle_class\/?chapter=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BCG<\/a> shows, the top 10% only is consuming travel, but on a population of almost 200m, it&rsquo;s already an interesting volume.<\/p>\n<p>Enters <a title=\"HotelUrbano\" href=\"hotelurbano.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hotel Urbano<\/a>, which focuses on <strong>hotel bookings (65% of its revenues)<\/strong> and <strong>travel packages<\/strong> (not including flights). In a record three years since its foundation in 2011, the startup has grown to<strong> 500 employees<\/strong>, with 450 000 rooms available in 35 000 destinations on the website, and about <strong>15m users<\/strong> (all data are from <a title=\"HotelUrbano brazil startup\" href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2014\/03\/08\/tiger-global-checks-in-to-brazils-hotel-urbano-with-50m-round\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Techcrunch<\/a> May 2014 article)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/hotelurbano-screenshot-brazil-booking-website-startup-from-BRICS-countries-emerging-markets-innovation-is-everywhere-middle-class-online-3.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-791\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/hotelurbano-screenshot-brazil-booking-website-startup-from-BRICS-countries-emerging-markets-innovation-is-everywhere-middle-class-online-3.png\" alt=\"hotelurbano screenshot brazil booking website startup from BRICS countries emerging markets innovation is everywhere middle-class online\" width=\"640\" height=\"456\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the hospitality industry in Brazil is very fragmented, with 85% of small hotels owned by individuals rather than groups, being a local helped Hotel Urbano to <strong><a title=\"HotelUrbano Booking.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tnooz.com\/article\/booking-com-loses-crown-to-hotel-urbano-top-brazil-travel-sites-may-12-2012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">take over Booking.com in May 2012<\/a><\/strong>, barely a year after inception.<\/p>\n<p>On an interesting note, <strong>HotelUrbano has also launched two concept stores in Rio<\/strong>, where they recorded a strong increase on the average booking. Online, the average cart is around $600, when it reaches <strong>$2500 in these brick and mortar ventures.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brazil-hotelurbano-concept-store-rio-de-janeiro-e-commerce-BRIC-countries-startup-emerging-markets-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-792\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brazil-hotelurbano-concept-store-rio-de-janeiro-e-commerce-BRIC-countries-startup-emerging-markets-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-3.jpg\" alt=\"brazil hotelurbano concept store rio de janeiro e-commerce BRIC countries startup emerging markets martin pasquier innovation is everywhere\" width=\"590\" height=\"443\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>HotelUrbano has already closed four rounds of <strong>funding for a total of $85m<\/strong>, mostly from Insight Ventures, a VC based in New-York.
