I knew Johnson &amp; Johnson on their customer-facing side, but did not really know much about their product-building innovation engine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 509px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5419\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1400-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1400\" width=\"499\" height=\"374\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Johnson &amp; Johnson&rsquo;s innovation ecosystem<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A few points from the keynotes I followed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>#1 Large companies such as Johnson &amp; Johnson increasingly innovate with smaller, more local actors<\/h2>\n<p>Melinda Richter, Global Head of Johnson &amp; Johnson Innovation, JLABS, shared that Johnson &amp; Johnson <strong>used to partner mostly with other large companies before<\/strong>. <strong>Today, local needs demand a different type of collaboration<\/strong>, explained by the three-pronged strategy of Johnson &amp; Johnson:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>JLABS<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovation Centers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>JJDC<\/strong> (investments)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Dong Wu, who heads the Asia-Pacific Innovation Center for Johnson &amp; Johnson, explained that <strong>even though Johnson &amp; Johnson invests roughly 9bn$\/y globally in R&amp;D, they can\u2019t cover all, or form a new team for any new trend or discovery.<\/strong> Hence they <strong>actively search for external innovators such as universities or startups.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He also added that one of the values of a large company investing early in startups is to <strong>help them make the right choice<\/strong>: \u201c<strong>science startups can take years on a single focus<\/strong>, which may or may not be relevant. By jumping in as early as we can, we can <strong>help them pivot if need be and find a commercial output for research<\/strong> that might otherwise have remained outside of the market\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5420\" style=\"width: 509px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5420\" class=\"wp-image-5420\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1433-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1433\" width=\"499\" height=\"374\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The three pillars of J&amp;J&rsquo;s strategy to support innovation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The baseline is to take <strong>the best of Johnson &amp; Johnson Innovation\u2019s R&amp;D teams, and innovators from different ecosystems and partner with them and create new products.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lots of new products<strong> come from external innovation<\/strong>. Before, Johnson &amp; Johnson used to partner with large companies, but <strong>now they understand the need to innovate at an early stage with local companies<\/strong> and foster an ecosystem of our R&amp;D teams and the best innovators.<\/p>\n<h2>#2 An Ageing Asia is a field of challenges &amp; opportunities for healthcare companies<\/h2>\n<p>While the <strong>world\u2019s population is ageing<\/strong>, this phenomenon is <strong>most noticeable in Asia-Pacific<\/strong>. The region will have 844m people over 60 by 2030, with <strong>China and Japan contributing the most to that trend.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More diseases develop with age, such as cancers, mental illness and diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5421\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5421\" class=\"wp-image-5421\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1428-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1428\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">World map of population ageing rates<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5422\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5422\" class=\"wp-image-5422\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1429-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1429\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cancer and chronic diseases figures in Asia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dong Wu also added that <strong>Asia will soon produce more patents in healthcare than any other region of the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>#3 Asia-Pac countries have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to healthcare innovation<\/h2>\n<p>I came for Dong Wu\u2019s keynote on Asia-Pac\u2019s innovation ecosystem, and found his knowledge and experience of different countries provides many insights into the biggest innovators in the region:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5423\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5423\" class=\"wp-image-5423\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1409-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1409\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patent applications figures<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>China<\/strong>: The country has <strong>strong traction in healthcare due to the overseas returnees effect<\/strong> (PhD, MDs) who come back to China to study and work in local universities and startups. <strong>Regulations on healthcare are easing and the quality of biotech startups increases all the time.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>South<\/strong> <strong>Korea<\/strong>: It has <strong>great universities and education, young CEOs and many small biotech companie<\/strong>s (&lt;5pax). 580 such companies were identified, a <strong>great signal of a dynamic ecosystem.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Japan<\/strong>: The country has <strong>always been strong in science with 22 Nobel prizes<\/strong> to its name, but there are <strong>challenges in the translation to <\/strong>commercial<strong> product due to lack of entrepreneurs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>India<\/strong>: They <strong>push commercial partners to open incubation in different cities<\/strong>. There are few discoveries in drugs and devices, but as an investor, it\u2019s easier with less screening. There are also <strong>better startups than in the China\u2019s jungle of thousands, many of them sub-par.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Singapore<\/strong>: There is <strong>great support from the government<\/strong>, and the wealth of the ecosystem is with <strong>key universities, scientists and entrepreneurs at an arm\u2019s reach.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>#4 Singapore as a rising scene for healthcare innovation<\/h2>\n<p>Philip Lim, Chief Executive Officer at ETPL, shared that <strong>10% of Singaporeans have a metabolic disease, and more than 30% of seniors are over 80 years old<\/strong>. His assessment of Singapore is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a <strong>rising standard of local universities<\/strong>, with both NUS and NTU reaching the top 50 rankings globally.<\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>46,000 knowledge workers in science, research and startups in Singapore<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There is <strong>still a small Venture Capital scene in the country, but it shows fast growth.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5424\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5424\" class=\"wp-image-5424\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1402-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1402\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Different financing methods at each stage of a startup&rsquo;s growth<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>#5 Winning innovators at the Johnson &amp; Johnson Innovation QuickFire Challenge in Singapore<\/h2>\n<p>To wrap-up, here are the three winners of the Johnson &amp; Johnson Innovation Singapore QuickFire Challenge \u2013 Metabolic Disease Innovation:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pharmaceutical sector:<\/strong> <strong>Nanyang Technological University<\/strong> (based in Singapore), led by Dr. Harshyaa Makhija, Research Fellow, and Prof. Peter Droge. Their solution to <strong>improve outcome and decelerate progression among patients with Wilson\u2019s disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Consumer Health:<\/strong> <strong>PreventAGE Health Care<\/strong> (based in New Hampshire, U.S.A.), led by Paul Beisswenger, M.D., CSO and Mark Carvlin, Ph.D., President and COO.
