(Photo by iSPIRT)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/indiastack.org\/india-stack-the-bedrock-of-a-digital-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India Stack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a set of <strong>open APIs<\/strong> made of <strong>different layers.<\/strong> They are named the <strong>Presence-less, Paperless and Cashless Layers.<\/strong> It began as a <strong>collaborative project<\/strong> between <strong>iSPIRT (Indian Software Product Industry Roundtable) and the Indian government. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nikhil Kumar, Head of Developer Ecosystem at iSPIRT, explains how the government has created a <strong>digital infrastructure<\/strong> that <strong>allows anyone to utilize and devise solutions for India\u2019s toughest problems.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201c<\/strong><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government is building a platform, the India Stack, which is disrupting a lot of industries, for example the financial industry. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We passed last year an open API policy which mandates all large tech platforms built by the government to open APIs for everyone to leverage on these data to launch new products and services.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>The Presence-less Layer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5014 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Aadhaar-300x193.png\" alt=\"Aadhaar\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aadhaar &#8211; the Presence-less Layer &#8211; is a <strong>12-digit number allocated to each Indian resident<\/strong> that stores their <strong>biometric and demographic data in a centralized database. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nec.com\/en\/press\/201610\/global_20161012_02.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of Oct \u201816, the number of people with a registered Aadhaar number and card has surpassed 1 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nearly <strong>80% of the country\u2019s entire population.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt has been the fastest user acquisition ever, even faster than WhatsApp or Facebook.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains Nikhil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any modern device with a camera, be it a smartphone or laptop, can capture scans of the user\u2019s fingerprint or iris. When a third party needs to verify the identity of the individual, all the individual needs to do is to send a fingerprint or iris scan to the third party which subsequently sends the data to a centralized database for verification. Aadhaar therefore <strong>removes the need for a customer to provide physical identification for authentication purposes.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine an airport that integrates Aadhaar into its operations. The airport would allow passengers to check-in and board their flights without the need for their ID or passports as long as he willingly provides his fingerprint or retina scan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considered the world\u2019s largest national identification number project, <strong>many startups have leveraged on the Aadhaar database to facilitate methods of payment and digital authentication. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><span class=\"il\">Aadhaar<\/span> Payments (AEPS), is one such example, it will allow people to send and receive money based on only their <span class=\"il\">Aadhaar<\/span> identity number and biometric information.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This could be the solution India required to usher its vast majority of population \u2014 which is still not connected to the internet, is illiterate, and doesn&rsquo;t own smartphones \u2014 to cashless digital payments.<\/p>\n<p>Already, the State Bank of India has launched a testbed in Shirki village where<strong> 100 merchants have been\u00a0provided with Android smartphones and fingerprint scanners, to help them move away from cash.\u00a0<\/strong>It could possibly replace traditional point-of-sale machines by emphasizing on biometric payments instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"il\">Aadhaar<\/span>\u00a0Payments are likely to be more popular in smaller towns and villages, where loading a wallet to use it, or having to own a smartphone to operate a payments app like the UPI are some of the challenges to adoption.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5043\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5043\" class=\"wp-image-5043 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IDFC-Aadhaar-Pay.jpg\" alt=\"Aadhaar Payments launched by IDFC Bank\" width=\"650\" height=\"323\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An explanation of Aadhaar Payments. (Photo by IDFC Bank)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><b>The Paperless Layer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next layer, the Paperless Layer, consists of the <strong>\u2018digital locker\u2019<\/strong> and <strong>\u2018digital signature\u2019<\/strong> components.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u2018digital locker\u2019 component consists of a <strong>set of digitized documents<\/strong> issued to a <strong>particular Aadhaar number<\/strong> and is commonly referred to as the <strong>e-KYC (Know Your Customer) bundle.<\/strong> These documents can be <strong>issued by government or third party bodies<\/strong> and are <strong>stored either in a shared or independent repository.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With acknowledgement by the owner of the unique Aadhaar number, <strong>third parties can request for these documents from the respective repositories<\/strong> to <strong>verify the identity of the individual.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This e-KYC service provides an electronic proof of identity, address, mobile number and email address for the enterprise. It\u00a0therefore <strong>allows for ease of verification regarding the assignment of personal contact details with the Aadhaar number.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>e-Sign<\/strong> &#8211; or the \u2018digital signature\u2019 component &#8211; is a mechanism facilitated by e-KYC for that <strong>allows for the digital signing of documents.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be <strong>associated with service delivery applications via an open API<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">for<\/span> <strong>efficient authentication without the use of a physical verification token. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legaldesk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LegalDesk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an example of a startup leveraging on the e-Sign process and offers to create verified legal documents in minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5015\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5015\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5015\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/LegalDesk-1024x481.png\" alt=\"startup in India legaldesk\" width=\"1024\" height=\"481\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LegalDesk offers to be India&rsquo;s trusted, Do-it-Yourself platform for making legal documents online. These third parties can <strong>simply request for the e-KYC bundle from the collective repository<\/strong> before <strong>granting a service or product to the individual.<\/strong> Telecom leaders such as Vodafone and Airtel have already <strong>integrated the e-KYC system into SIM card verifications.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5016\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5016\" class=\"wp-image-5016 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/494449-close-up-finger-germany-hand-logo-vodafone-sim-card-getty-images-1-300x178.jpg\" alt=\"startup in India vodafone\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vodafone is one of the players that have decided to integrate the India Stack into their operations.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><b>The Cashless Layer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>Unified Payments Interface (UPI)<\/strong> &#8211; the Cashless Layer &#8211; <strong>allows fund transfers to be made between banks with the help of a single identifier.<\/strong> Reported as the most disruptive technology in Fintech so far, it <strong>marks a huge step towards the financial inclusion of majority of the Indian population and the possibility of instantaneous financial transactions. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allows small businesses &#8211; in particular e-commerce ones &#8211; to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yourstory.com\/2016\/07\/india-stack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> collect payment from customers without the use of any cards while allowing for a variety of payment methods on the customers\u2019 end.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There is also the <strong>possibility of mass transfer of cash to individuals<\/strong> &#8211; the government sending grants to a group of citizens for instance &#8211; by <strong>simply referring to the Aadhaar number of its recipients.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Potential of the India Stack as One<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what makes the India Stack the most disruptive innovation even among independent enterprises? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nikhil Kumar highlighted the potential of Aadhaar to disrupt a variety of industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it will take <strong>2 minutes to apply for a loan<\/strong> and you won\u2019t need to go to a bank to get financial services. Startups can now onboard customers at scale. \u00a0The infrastructure is already built.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An interesting demonstration of the capabilities of the India Stack is the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dalberg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/5-Minute-Loans-India-Stack.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collaboration between Capital Float, a loans company serving Indian SMEs and startups, Aditya Birla Finance, a company offering customized financing solutions and the fintech startup Eko<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, working for the State Bank of India and ICICI Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using e-KYC for verification, e-Sign for the loan agreement and Aadhaar for authentication, one can receive small loans from Aditya Birla Finance within minutes of applying for the loan through a mobile-based app created by Capital Float.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5018\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5018\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5018\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/capitalfloat.jpg\" alt=\"startup in India capital float\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Capital Float allows for loans to be processed and validated in hours. (Photo by Capital Float)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, the India Stack offers and has built-in\u00a0<strong>significant interoperability and trust into the transaction<\/strong>. By integrating the entire payment process with the mobility offered by smartphones, Ritesh Agarwal, CEO of the Fintech startup FonePaisa \u2013 the startup which aims to create the world\u2019s first omni-channel payment platform &#8211; believes that the framework is an exemplary model to the rest of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBanks can come together and become interoperable without the international switches such as MasterCard and Visa\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he mentions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Banks and corporations are leveraging on the potential of the India Stack as well.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nikhil acknowledges the possibilities that the India Stack engenders.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have made banking into an API. It is Apple Pay on steroids. Everyone will end up using it. 22 banks have already enrolled. After one month, there were already 150,000 merchants accepting it. Our goal is to have 100 million UPI users in one year, which is the number of Indians having both a bank account and mobile phone today.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a similar manner to a startup, the <strong>Indian government is fully dedicated to ensuring its vision becomes reality<\/strong>.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techinasia.com\/why-india-took-drastic-step-to-go-cashless\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The government\u2019s decision of phasing out its higher denomination currency notes of INR 500 and INR 1,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in November last year was a drastic step to push the majority of the Indian population to migrate towards a Digital India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> With the Indian government pioneering such a huge scale project to harken India into the next digital age, other countries are watching its movements carefully as the immense size of the Aadhaar database continues to grow. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One seldom associates the terms \u2018innovation\u2019 and \u2018disruption\u2019 with the government of a country.
