The region has also borne witness to the emergence of innovative yet localized models that cater to the Asian demographic such as Pandabed and OYO Rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many, the term \u2018shared economy\u2019 is often associated with the<strong> start-up turned global budget accommodation platform Airbnb<\/strong>. The company harkened a culture of shared space, local-traveller interaction and trust. Airbnb, however, has had its<strong> fair share of difficulties when attempting to break into Asia to expand its market reach.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hospitality in Asia : Airbnb<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4951\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4951\" class=\"wp-image-4951 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/airbnb.jpg\" alt=\"hospitality in asia 1\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">San Francisco-based vacation home online marketplace Airbnb, Inc has allowed the concept of shared spaces to gain worldwide acceptance.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jia Jih Chai, former Managing Director of Airbnb for the Southeast Asia and currently Vice President of Carousell for International Operations and Growth, illustrated some obstacles that stood in the way of the growth of Airbnb into the industry of hospitality in Asia. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab\u00a0(Travellers) liked the idea of <strong>staying in a home rather than a hotel, especially without huge marketing costs<\/strong>. The biggest challenge was <strong>reaching out to users and finding efficient ways to get customers<\/strong>. Two things helped us: <strong>product referrals of happy clients<\/strong> who shared their experience and stay on social media and <strong>social media influencers<\/strong> who shared theirs with their followers.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By gaining acceptance from the public, Airbnb has paved the way for other innovative start-ups to change the face of hospitality in Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hospitality in Asia : PandaBed<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4952\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4952\" class=\"wp-image-4952 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/LOGO-for-SEAS-01-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"hospitality in asia 2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PandaBed aims to change the mindsets of Asian consumers towards the shared economy. Photo by sharingeconomy.org.sg.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore-based start-up PandaBed strives towards making booking travel accommodation easy by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pandabed.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connecting individuals to owners and property managers of apartments, villas and private residences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While PandaBed and Airbnb may have similar business models, the former is <strong>focused on serving the \u2018Asian\u2019 customer<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CEO James Chua commented\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.9yardsinnovation.com\/airbnb-pandabeds-success-unfold-hospitality-localisation-for-asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in an interview with 9yards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Asian region will require a <strong>\u2018separate brand and engine from Airbnb\u2019 in order to bring about a change in conventional Asian mindsets. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By emphasizing on localization, PandaBed leverages on financial benefits by providing loyalty rewards. OYO has a network of over 70,000 rooms in 7,000 hotels<strong>\u00a0in 200 cities over India<\/strong>, making it the largest branded hotel network. A million OYO stays are reserved monthly. Their operations <strong>provide standardized services including free Wi-Fi and breakfast, toilets and televisions<\/strong> in these hotel rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary reason for the immense popularity of OYO is its <strong>commitment to consistency \u2013<\/strong> the start-up gives clients the security that they will experience identical service across every booking and facility <strong>unlike small independent hotels that may vary in standards.<\/strong> The OYO interface also allows clients to <strong>view the state of their accommodation on their booking platform<\/strong>, fostering greater trust by the customer in their services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These hotels must expect to invest about $60 per room to integrate with OYO&rsquo;s branding; however, CEO Ritesh Agarwal notes that <strong>most can earn profits from the 5<\/strong><\/span><strong>th<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> day since the investment.<\/strong> The hotel is audited every 3 days by quality analysts and customers can rate the hotel upon checkout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agarwal\u2019s vision is to <strong>bring physical space online to change the ways individuals perceive stays away from home.<\/strong> He confidently puts forth the unified goal of founder and start-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we began the business, I initially thought it would be a hotel chain business. We now<strong> envision taking every piece of land in the world, standardizing it and incorporating it onto our online digital platform<\/strong>. Instead of competing with OYO on their home ground, <strong>ZenRooms targets untapped markets such as Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore with the vision becoming \u2018the biggest budget hotel brand in Southeast Asia\u2019.<\/strong> Kiren Tanna, co-founder of ZenRooms, wants the company to be<strong> built on \u2018quality\u2019 rather than \u2018quantity\u2019 and \u2018sees a lot of potential in improving room service via mobile\u2019. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ZenRooms innovates with schemes such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zenrooms.com\/zen-for-business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zen for Business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a corporate travel programme that gives 15% off on all bookings and free night stays to attract larger enterprises to engage their services. Companies under the Zen for Business scheme include the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS), Lazada and Uber.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hospitality in Asia : Tujia<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4955\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4955\" class=\"wp-image-4955 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/tujia-official-logo.jpg\" alt=\"hospitality in asia tujia\" width=\"600\" height=\"182\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">China-based Tujia adopts the strategy of localization \u2013 similar to that of PandaBed \u2013 with a stringent focus on the Chinese market. Photo credits to chinatopix.com.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a similar vein, Tujia, China\u2019s four-year-old online vacation rental site, intends to <strong>localize its services for the Chinese customer<\/strong>. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/knowledge.ckgsb.edu.cn\/2015\/08\/12\/technology\/how-tujia-chinas-airbnb-is-different-from-airbnb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa Yang, co-founder and CTO, notes two glaring differences between Asian and Western travellers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first is that of <strong>trust<\/strong> \u2013 Asian guests tend to be <strong>warier of vacation rentals<\/strong> and prefer to<strong> opt for slightly more expensive but dependable accommodations<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, Asian consumers possess a <strong>higher level of expectation with regards to services rendered.<\/strong> Tujia therefore tailors its services to suit the Chinese customer. The start-up employs offline teams to physically inspect properties in order to upkeep a high standard of available accommodations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Corporate Hospitality Transformation in Asia<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corporates, such as the AccorHotels group, are also establishing themselves as agents of innovation alongside independent start-ups. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2016, the AccorHotels\u2019 Marketing Innovation Lab revealed its brainchild <strong>JO&amp;JOE<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A brand catered for Millennials that intends to <strong>blend the best of private-rental, hostel and hotel formats, JO&amp;JOE incorporates a myriad of fresh design concepts<\/strong> such as a \u2018Happy House\u2019 where clients can cook and do laundry and \u2018Together\u2019, a modular sleeping area that offers spacious beds, private lockers and USB ports.
