{"id":439,"date":"2014-07-07T13:06:03","date_gmt":"2014-07-07T05:06:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/?p=439"},"modified":"2014-07-07T13:06:03","modified_gmt":"2014-07-07T05:06:03","slug":"traffic-butter-app-solve-traffic-issues-lagos-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innovationiseverywhere.com\/fr\/traffic-butter-app-solve-traffic-issues-lagos-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Traffic Butter, a startup to solve Nigeria&#039;s Lagos jams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During <strong><a title=\"Mobile West Africa 2014\" href=\"http:\/\/mobilewestafrica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mobile West Africa&rsquo;s<\/a><\/strong> demo day in <strong>Lagos, Nigeria<\/strong>, we saw a selection of startups solving local issue, all expecting a reward and more exposure of being the top startup of the conference.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Traffic Butter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trafficbutter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Traffic Butter<\/a><\/strong> ended up second, behind Find a Med, however it is our personal favorite. Why? Just imagine <strong>a Waze for Africa&rsquo;s most populous\u00a0country<\/strong>, getting data from traffic by community-powered notifications, and updates for users by SMS, Twitter or on iOs\/Android apps. Lagos is competing (and regularly winning) for the \u00ab\u00a0worst traffic jams in the world\u00a0\u00bb. The central business district is located on an island with limited access, and the number of cars has jumped from<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/nigeria-lagos-traffic-butter-waze-africa-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-startups-east-africa-mobile-west-africa-2014-emerging-markets-technology-transportation-app-3.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-443\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/nigeria-lagos-traffic-butter-waze-africa-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-startups-east-africa-mobile-west-africa-2014-emerging-markets-technology-transportation-app-3.jpeg\" alt=\"nigeria lagos traffic butter waze africa martin pasquier innovation is everywhere startups east africa mobile west africa 2014 emerging markets technology transportation app\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had a discussion with <strong>Stanley Okafor<\/strong>, founder of Traffic Butter. Here is our chat, which hopefully will help discover a bit more of this amazing country and the problems local startups manage to solve.<\/p>\n<h2>An interview with Traffic Butter founder Stanley Okafor<\/h2>\n<p><em>Innovation is Everywhere: When did you launch Traffic Butter, and how did you do it?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Traffic Butter: I started Trafficbutter in November 2010.<\/p>\n<p>TrafficButter&rsquo;s goal is simple: to help Nigerians <strong>NAVIGATE\u00a0SMARTER<\/strong> and ease the traffic stress on them by providing real-time\u00a0traffic updates through an easy to use mobile App that captures\u00a0traffic updates, and presents them to its users in a concise manner.\u00a0The TrafficButter Mobile App is available for download for Blackberry\u00a0devices, Android devices, Apple ipads and Iphones. Did you start with a hackhaton?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>TB: No. It started off as a\u00a0twitter handle \/ Facebook page and then evolved into an app. Originally, it was a side-project which had to become a full-time\u00a0project given the 24hr nature of demand for traffic updates and our\u00a0recognition of the business opportunity traffic updates presents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>IEV: What are the milestones you have achieved so far, in terms of users, and recognition or partnerships?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>TB:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Number of users: We have a total of <strong>66,000 plus users<\/strong> across the app and our twitter handle<\/li>\n<li>Partnership with companies or institutions:\n<ul>\n<li>We have enjoyed an informal partnership with the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency<\/li>\n<li>We have also enjoyed an informal partnership with the Lagos TrafficRadio, Inspiration FM and Radio Continental &#8211; 3 local radio stations which use our content and information stream to inform their millions of users on current traffic conditions.<\/li>\n<li>We have also partnered with a Vehicle tracking company to deliver vehicle tracking services to our numerous users.<\/li>\n<li>We came in 2nd at the Mobile West Africa App Developer Competition<\/li>\n<li>Our twitter handle was a 1st level nominee for The Shorty Awards which honors the best of social media, recognizing the people and organizations producing real-time short form content across Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram, Vine, and the rest of the social Web.<\/li>\n<li>We also partnered with the Largest Telecommunications Company in Nigeria to deliver Traffic Updates via SMS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>We were also nominated for the Nigeria Youth Merit Awards in the \u00ab\u00a0Best Use of Social Media\u00a0\u00bb Category for the innovativeness and usefulness of our work.<\/li>\n<li>We have been featured on Nigerian Television Authority International, VentureBurn, Ventures Africa, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/nigeria-lagos-traffic-butter-waze-africa-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-startups-east-africa-mobile-west-africa-2014-emerging-markets-technology-transportation-app-2-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-444\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/nigeria-lagos-traffic-butter-waze-africa-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-startups-east-africa-mobile-west-africa-2014-emerging-markets-technology-transportation-app-2-3.jpg\" alt=\"nigeria lagos traffic butter waze africa martin pasquier innovation is everywhere startups east africa mobile west africa 2014 emerging markets technology transportation app 2\" width=\"640\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Funding, talent, and a supportive ecosystem: this is what is missing in Nigeria startup\u00a0scene for Traffic Butter<\/h2>\n<p><em>IEV: What are the challenges you have faced so far, or that you feel\u00a0you will face soon?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>TB: Funding and Talent. These 2 challenges have\u00a0existed from day one. We need more of these to take the app to the\u00a0next level, by investing in product development, Talent acquisition,\u00a0Marketing and West African regional expansion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>IEV: Did someone or something helped you within the Nigerian\u00a0startup ecosystem?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>TB: Not at all. We have run everything\u00a0on personal resources and efforts so far and gotten no help.
