The event was organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kinerjabisa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KinerjaBisa<\/a>, a company supporting SMEs to expand through Singapore. \u00a0Some major insights really caught our attention during the event, which are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>E-Commerce is taking its stronghold over Indonesia&rsquo;s startups<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Market suitability is preferred over brand new innovation<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Incompetent payment system<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The problems of Indonesian talents<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>E-Commerce is taking its stronghold over Indonesia\u2019s startups<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trend on e-commerce growth might on the surface seem unsurprising to some of you, even us! Yet, after we dig deeper on the details, the <\/span><b>exponential rate of the growth is shocking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Referring to World Economic Outlook data compiled by the Internet Service Providers Association, Indonesia&rsquo;s e-commerce market was estimated <\/span><b>at Rp 18 trillion ( US$ 1.3 billion ) in 2015,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><b>37 million consumers from a total population of 255 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4359 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img2.jpg\" alt=\"img2\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<em> The use of social media among Indonesian is arising<\/em><\/pre>\n<pre><\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The figures are up <\/span><b>from Rp 12 trillion and 27 million consumers recorded in 2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As for 2016, the association predicted that the e-commerce market would reach <\/span><b>Rp 25 trillion with 49 million consumers.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These numbers itself already indicate <\/span><b>a 108% increase in the value in just 2 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From various different industries, an <\/span><b>overwhelming majority of the startups who pitched at the event engage e-commerce as their main business platform<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These startup industries ranged <\/span>from online business matchmaking provider<b> (Koneksi),<\/b> food ordering platform<b> (Laparkali and QJump) <\/b>to barber intermediary<b> (Cukur) <\/b>and car wash intermediary provider<b> (MobWash).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is evident here, that <\/span><b>e-commerce is indeed the giant of Indonesia\u2019s startup industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<div id=\"attachment_4362\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4362\" class=\"wp-image-4362 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img3.jpg\" alt=\"img3\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Qjump, food ordering startup at Start Up pitching session<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This trend is however not without reason. Many of these startups are enticed by the e-commerce market size of Indonesia, which is a total of <\/span><b>73 million of internet user as per 2015<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, <\/span><b>this figure is only 29% of the total population<\/b> <b>(The Jakarta Post) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which indicates the<\/span><b> huge room for growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, Indonesia&rsquo;s e-commerce market is also predicted to grow to a total of <\/span><b>140 million of people by 2020 (Redwing Asia)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0The intensive use of messaging apps, chatbots and social networks by Indonesians should also have an important impact on e-commerce and we are probably going to see more startups in \u201csocial commerce\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Market suitability is preferred over brand new innovations.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesian startups are prioritizing <\/span><b>utility and usability of their products for their niche demands over innovation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the understanding of the demographic is especially crucial here. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niki Tsuraya Yaumi, the COO of the Indonesian event discovery app <a href=\"http:\/\/goersapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Goers<\/a>, shared about her past failure experience of 5 unsuccessful tech startups. Among these past failures, the company which survives is the one which<\/span><b> serves as a lifestyle provider for the market<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to TechInAsia, the <strong>t<\/strong><\/span><b>op 3 reasons on why startups fail in Indonesia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misunderstanding the job market,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overlooking local market behaviours, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misunderstanding cultural adaptation,<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<pre><\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is clearly illustrated by the market\u2019s preference of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaskus.co.id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kaskus<\/a> (the biggest Indonesian online forum and e-commerce marketplace) over ebay (e-commerce company); or the preference of GrabTaxi (Mobile e-hailing platform) over Uber (Online transportation network). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both ebay and Uber have made the mistake of <\/span><b>not diving into the local market long enough to be aware of important, not-so-subtle consumer behaviors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Uber neglected that c<\/span><b>redit card and online payment are still of minimal use<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and eBay ignored the fact that, in Indonesia,<\/span><b> community based and peer-to-peer trust will trump auction every single time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<div id=\"attachment_4365\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4365\" class=\"wp-image-4365 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img4-e1474364628278.jpg\" alt=\"img4\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panel discussion 1 with Maulana Bachtiar (GIV), Rica Handayani (Google) and Rio Sutanto (LinkedIn)<\/p><\/div>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This misunderstanding might come from the diversity of the market landscape in Indonesia, as explained by Maulana Bachtiar from the online media startup GIV News. <strong>\u201c<\/strong><\/span><strong><i>The market is very diverse. Jakarta population would have concerns about traffic while Papua population have more concerns about the cost<\/i>\u201d. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this information, startups in Indonesia are <\/span><b>leveraging on existing technologies and business models to suit the needs of their specific market rather than new products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4368\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4368\" class=\"wp-image-4368 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img5-e1474364768813.jpg\" alt=\"img5\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RoomRoom, the winner of \u201cMost Insightful StartUp 2016\u201d award<\/p><\/div>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roomroom.sg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RoomRoom<\/a>, for example, winner of the Most Insightful Startup 2016 award at the event, provides a platform connecting homeowners, tenants and roommate seekers. RoomRoom <\/span><b>insightfully realized there was a market<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for long-term temporary housing, and <\/span><b>integrated existing systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like matchmaking, listings and user interface in their model. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These systems are commonly used by businesses like Carousell (online marketplace), Airbnb (temporary accommodation) and Tinder (dating app); the technology is not something new, but the <\/span><b>tailoring targets the needs unfulfilled by the current service providers.<\/b><\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<div id=\"attachment_4369\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4369\" class=\"wp-image-4369 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img6-e1474364877369.jpg\" alt=\"img6\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RoomRoom identifies areas unaddressed by its competitors<br \/><\/p><\/div>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Yet <\/b><b>despite the blooming of ecommerce and the tailoring of the niche market, there are major hurdles in the payment system in Indonesia.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is still a \u201clack of trust into paying online\u201d, as said Niki. Indonesia is indeed, reported by Forter as the country with the highest level of ecommerce payment fraud. It is reported that <\/span><b>35% of transactions from Indonesia are fraudulent, and fraud rates exceed 10% in the five riskiest nations.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, the <\/span><b>banking rate of Indonesian adult is 65%,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whom are also still <\/span><b>more accustomed in bank transfer as a method of payment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This creates a problem <\/span><b>of hassle, risk and security issues.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various startups have tried to tackle this issue, by<\/span><b> integrating secure bank transfer system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their payment method. Shopee ID, an e-commerce marketplace confirms payments from customer and forwards the confirmation to sellers, e<\/span><b>nsuring security for both the customers and the sellers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the <\/span><b>ubiquity of such payment is still limited as compared to the large Indonesia\u2019s population.<\/b><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The problem of talent demographics.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, another major topic largely discussed was also the problem of talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<div id=\"attachment_4370\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4370\" class=\"wp-image-4370 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img7.jpg\" alt=\"img7\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panel Discussion 2 with Niki Tsuraya Yaumi (Goers), Sunil Tolani (Calibreworks) and Rudy Fang (SBC)<br \/><\/p><\/div>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was mentioned by Niki, that <\/span><b>there\u2019s a mentality of \u201cWe know we\u2019re good, let\u2019s lay back\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On top of that there\u2019s a considerably high rate of startups failing, which is around <\/span><b>50-80% failure rate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as reported in Strategic Review, the Indonesian Journal of Leadership, Policy and World Affair. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Sunil Tolani, one of the expert panel from the digital marketing and branding company Calibreworks whom has been largely involved in mentoring startups said that <\/span><b>\u201c<em>It\u2019s not because they don\u2019t know what to do, they simply just want to stop<\/em>\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, indicating a persistent unwillingness to go the extra mile that\u2019s crucial in this environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00ab\u00a0<em>Indonesia needs to build the mindset culture of pushing themselves to excellence. When facing obstacles, some startups don&rsquo;t go the extra mile. That&rsquo;s the main reason why lots of startups fail<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0<\/strong>, added Sunil Tolani. On this topic\u00a0Niki also added <strong>\u00ab\u00a0<em>The attitude towards failure is what really differentiates the Indonesian ecosytem and the Silicon Valley ecosystem<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/pre>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is also worsened by the <\/span><b>mismatch between expectations of the young population and the actual environment they are dealing with<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With very prominent Asian conservative values still encompassing Indonesia\u2019s demography, Indonesian talents tend to seek for <\/span><b>corporate-like work environment in terms of work security<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesia has actually a<\/span><b> very large pool of talented individuals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Indonesia is one of the main source of freelance designers for 99designs, a worldwide marketplace for creative design, with<\/span><b> 129,000 registered Indonesian designers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>To say that Indonesian startups are not able to compete globally is also a fallacy.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As a matter of fact, <\/span><b>Mr. Deny Rahardjo as CEO of PT. Kinerja Pay Indonesia (the first Indonesian e-commerce in Indonesia listed in the US Stock Market)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, provided the example of Personaedu. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personaedu is an education software company in Indonesia which has acquired contracts with 1900 schools in Holland and collaborated with 2 worldwide publishers. Personaedu has also won the most prestigious Education Software Competition worldwide, BETT Awards 2011. He elaborated, that Indonesia \u201c<\/span><b><i>does<\/i><\/b><b> have the potential and <\/b><b><i>should<\/i><\/b><b> go global<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that some of these talents <\/span><b>do not realize that they do have indispensable talents<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab\u00a0<em>We have a lot of smart people in Indonesia, but it&rsquo;s a challenge to make them realize they have talent. That is why startups tend to look for talents outside Indonesia<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb explained Rica Handayani, strategic partner manager at Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An international recruitment agency which has dealt with a lot of Indonesian talents, RGF which was also present on the event elaborated that the main problem is that they are still <\/span><b>undiscovered and unpolished<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
