{"id":2006,"date":"2015-02-11T18:41:04","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T10:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/?p=2006"},"modified":"2015-02-11T18:41:04","modified_gmt":"2015-02-11T10:41:04","slug":"future-coworking-coworking-visas-corporate-partnerships-real-estate-specialists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innovationiseverywhere.com\/fr\/future-coworking-coworking-visas-corporate-partnerships-real-estate-specialists\/","title":{"rendered":"The Future of Coworking: coworking visas, corporate partnerships and real-estate specialists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>coworking phenomenon<\/strong> might not be very old, yet, it already has a lot of perspectives and questions to address for its near and long-term future.<\/p>\n<p>As we attended <strong>Asia\u2019s first <a title=\"CuAsia 2015\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cuasia.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coworking Unconference<\/a><\/strong> in Bali in January 2015, we heard a lot of the speakers (coworking operators for the biggest part) share their insights on <strong>the future of coworking spaces.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2066\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Future-of-Coworking-coworking-visas-corporate-partnerships-and-real-estate-specialists-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-brad-neuberg-1-2.png\" alt=\"The Future of Coworking coworking visas corporate partnerships and real estate specialists martin pasquier innovation is everywhere brad neuberg 1\" width=\"640\" height=\"377\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Yes, this is the first flyer of the very first coworking space!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If we were to date the concept itself, <strong>coworking could find its origins in 2005,<\/strong> when American computer scientist Brad Neuberg shared on <a title=\"Coworking Brad Neuberg\" href=\"http:\/\/codinginparadise.org\/weblog\/2005\/08\/coworking-community-for-developers-who.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his blog<\/a> the opening of a new kind of space:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u00ab\u00a0Do you work for yourself from home?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Do you miss community and structure?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Join Spiral Muse and Brad Neuberg in creating a new kind of work<\/em><br \/>\n<em>environment for free spirits!\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2067\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/future-of-work-future-corowking-wrap-up-coworking-unconference-asia-2015-coworking-spaces-stats-2012-2015-number-of-coworking-2.png\" alt=\"future of work future corowking wrap up coworking unconference asia 2015 coworking spaces stats 2012 2015 number of coworking\" width=\"509\" height=\"513\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since then, a few studies have shown the number of <strong>coworking spaces and available seats have roughly doubled each year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Coworking visas: coworkers of the world, unite!<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve covered extensively the topic of <a title=\"Coworking visas \" href=\"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/coworking-visa-helping-digital-nomads-teams-cross-borders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>coworking visas<\/strong><\/a> in a previous article, stating both the technical hurdles it faces as well as a few potential solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The main issues so far are both <strong>technical and financial<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A coworking visa or pass implies <strong>a common infrastructure<\/strong>, from membership data to payment systems, up to credit management in the case such a visa can have different levels of interaction. So far, most coworking spaces manage their data in a very local way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A second one is <strong>financial: how to make pay coworkers in countries where the cost of space and living can go from 1 (Indonesia) to 10 (Singapore, Hong-Kong)?<\/strong> Our sentiment would be to forget about the money and set a guidelines for a fair use of a few free days per year per member, above which he\/she would need to become a member.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2052\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/coworking-visa-feat-2.jpg\" alt=\"coworking visa feat\" width=\"567\" height=\"284\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Coworking Unconference Asia ended up by the setup of the <a title=\"Asia Coworking Alliance\" href=\"www.coworkingasia.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asia Coworking Alliance<\/a>, whose task list begins with this pass or visa for members who move across South-East Asia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Corporate partnerships: how can coworking spaces help large companies?<\/h2>\n<p>A recurring topic of the panels and sessions at CUASIA were about the <strong>partnerships between coworking spaces and corporates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A provocation, significant enough though, is first to flip the equation and ask rather how coworking spaces can help corporates, rather than the other way round.<\/p>\n<p>If coworking spaces are indeed <strong>chasing corporates for money to sustain their community,<\/strong> the long-term trend is clearly not in favour of corporates, whose model of hierarchy, salaries and career evolution are unfit for the generations who are now entering the age of work.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2068\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Future-of-Coworking-coworking-visas-corporate-partnerships-and-real-estate-specialists-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-brad-neuberg-2-2.png\" alt=\"The Future of Coworking coworking visas corporate partnerships and real estate specialists martin pasquier innovation is everywhere brad neuberg 2\" width=\"640\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Where would you work?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Only <a title=\"Future of work gen y\" href=\"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/future-work-wrap-asias-1st-coworking-unconference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7% of the genY is willing to work for a Fortune 500<\/a> company in 2015<\/strong>, and they will constitute 75% of the workforce by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>A common misunderstanding from corporates is about the <strong>community<\/strong>, this key concept of our age they have such a difficulty to understand as it implies transparency, collaboration and amateurism.<\/p>\n<p>While listening to some testimonials from the speakers, it appeared that <strong>corporates often wonder what level of control they can have on the community<\/strong> of a coworking space.<\/p>\n<p>Still, successful partnerships do exist.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In <strong>Singapore<\/strong>, The <strong>Hub<\/strong> is working with <strong>DBS<\/strong>, one of the largest bank of Asia, to foster social entrepreneurship through its <a title=\"DBS the hub social impact\" href=\"http:\/\/www.venturesforchange.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DBS-Hub Social Entrepreneurship Bootcamp<\/a> series (now in its 5th edition). The idea for DBS is to get an expertise from tomorrow\u2019s consumers and bank clients, with the support of the methodological framework of <strong>INSEAD<\/strong> business school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0RCL29Wy4U8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In <strong>Melbourne<\/strong>, <strong>Hub Australia<\/strong> partnered with <strong>PWC<\/strong> and the local government to keep youth working locally, through a program called <a title=\"Sparks hub australia pwc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hubaustralia.com\/spark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sparks<\/strong><\/a>. So far, both the corporate and the government have funded for about <strong>$80k the support for 16 \u201csparks\u201d<\/strong>, young people from the vicinity who benefited from a coworking space membership and mentoring to grow their projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The key success factor of these partnership often begins by <strong>a shared vision and the building of trust among partners<\/strong> whose culture and relation to work and money are usually diverging.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Real-estate and the community: two models for the future of coworking<\/h2>\n<p>Another trend made visible by <a title=\"Grace Sai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gracesai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grace Sai<\/a> from the Hub Singapore and the different talks is <strong>the difference between community powered and real-estate centric coworking space:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Community powered coworking spaces<\/strong> often start with a community, not a space, takes time to build, don\u2019t aim for profit at first, and, to be clear, often struggle financially to break even and make the whole thing sustainable. <strong>Their main asset is precisely the community, its diversity, its capability to create and innovate out of the standards of corporates or research labs.<\/strong> Many of these spaces receive a lot of partnership offerings from corporates and local gov, although there\u2019s no easy match.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On the other side, could we say, <strong>real-estate centric coworking spaces<\/strong> are bout<strong> selling desks first<\/strong>, then see if a community can emerge. It\u2019s clearly not the same game. Collective Works, in Singapore, is one of these players who target mostly SMEs and working professionals who need a space and, partly, a collaborative spirit. <strong>Since its opening in 2012, Collective Works went from 30 to 90 companies \u201chosted\u201d in the space<\/strong>, where they can also benefit from professional services ranging from printing to incorporation or consulting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2069\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Future-of-Coworking-coworking-visas-corporate-partnerships-and-real-estate-specialists-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-collective-works-singapore-2.jpeg\" alt=\"The Future of Coworking coworking visas corporate partnerships and real estate specialists martin pasquier innovation is everywhere collective works singapore\" width=\"640\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a title=\"Collective Works Singapore\" href=\"http:\/\/www.collectiveworks.com.sg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Collective Works<\/a>, in the CBD of Singapore, targets more professionals and SMEs<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s fair to say that a battle is breeding between these two poles of one same phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>Coworkers who begin in a community powered coworking space look for advice, like to share\u2026 but they also grow and as they do so, the need more professional support, and they are, as anyone, price-sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, real-estate centric spaces may look cold for people who choose the coworking culture as an alternative to a dead cold corporate world.<\/p>\n<p>Amarit Charoenphan from <a title=\"Hubba Bangkok\" href=\"http:\/\/hubbathailand.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hubba<\/a> in Thailand also warns of <strong>the rise of Megaspaces, run by real-estate companies and\/or government<\/strong> who, after acknowledging the rise of the coworking phenomenon, brutally seize the opportunity to scale it with huge \u201cblocks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2070\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/blk79-blk71-singapore-tech-coworking-The-Future-of-Coworking-coworking-visas-corporate-partnerships-and-real-estate-specialists-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-2.png\" alt=\"blk79 blk71 singapore tech coworking The Future of Coworking coworking visas corporate partnerships and real estate specialists martin pasquier innovation is everywhere\" width=\"640\" height=\"321\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Blk79, the new government-powered megaspace in the One-North tech cluster in Singapore,<br \/>\ninaugurated early February 2015.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Thailand, two of those megaspaces are planned, combining coworking desks, hotels, and service offices.<\/p>\n<p>The solution for community powered coworking spaces possibly lies in focusing on what they do best (growing a creative and innovative community), and to expand to new missions, such as entering the tech startup space where young teams also need to be nurtured.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Asia Coworking Alliance: defining and defending the coworking culture in the world&rsquo;s most dynamic region<\/h2>\n<p>Now that the different coworking spaces have grown, <strong>the need and the will for a common framework makes sense.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Singapore, the Hub went from a dozens of members at the opening to about 500 members in the community. Most of the spaces in South-East Asia experience this <strong>exponential growth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Asia Coworking Alliance<\/strong>, who stemmed from one of the session of the Coworking Unconference, will try to <strong>help both members, teams, and coworking spaces founders to design joint projects and a common philosophy<\/strong> to maintain their growth and professionalize.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For <strong>members<\/strong>, for instance, the <strong>coworking visa<\/strong> or a <strong>job portal<\/strong> could foster regional collaboration and bring a value to digital nomads always on the move.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>For <strong>teams<\/strong>, <strong>staff exchanges<\/strong> to learn more about the neighbouring spaces or <strong>sharing in open-source the core documents<\/strong> of the space would spare time and nerves to many new coworking spaces, while giving a framework which has been proven before.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>For <strong>founders<\/strong> at last, <strong>monthly hangouts<\/strong> and sharing strategic documents might also help to create a less fragmented scene than it is today, for the benefit of members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It will be extremely interesting to see how this project unravels in the next few months, so we&rsquo;ll be part of the next Coworking Unconference Asia 2016 to check how it went!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The coworking phenomenon might not be very old, yet, it already has a lot of perspectives and questions to address for its near and long-term future.
