{"id":1990,"date":"2015-02-03T17:46:45","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T09:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/?p=1990"},"modified":"2015-02-03T17:46:45","modified_gmt":"2015-02-03T09:46:45","slug":"future-work-wrap-asias-1st-coworking-unconference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innovationiseverywhere.com\/fr\/future-work-wrap-asias-1st-coworking-unconference\/","title":{"rendered":"The Future of Work &#8211; Wrap-up of the Asia\u2019s 1st Coworking Unconference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve attended the first <strong><a title=\"CUasia 2015\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cuasia.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coworking Unconference of Asia<\/a><\/strong>, organized by <strong><a title=\"Hubud bali\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hubud.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hubud<\/a> <\/strong>(The Hub in Ubud, Bali) as again, we have this privileged feeling to have witnessed something new, half-way between a tectonic, societal move and the birth of an ecosystem of organisations willing to innovate in a new field.<\/p>\n<p>The event was co-organized by some of the biggest and most pioneering coworking spaces from South-East Asia, namely\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Comma Indonesia coworking Jakarta\" href=\"http:\/\/comma.co.id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comma<\/a><\/strong> (Indonesia), <strong><a title=\"Hub Singapore\" href=\"http:\/\/singapore.impacthub.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hub Singapore<\/a><\/strong> (Singapore), <strong><a title=\"Hubba Thailand\" href=\"http:\/\/hubbathailand.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hubba<\/a><\/strong> (Thailand), <strong><a title=\"Hub Australia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hubaustralia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hub Australia<\/a><\/strong> (Australia).<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1991\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/coworking-space-asia-coworking-unconference-bali-hubud-cuasia-2015-logo-places-of-innovation-corporate-partnerships-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-2.jpg\" alt=\"coworking space asia coworking unconference bali hubud cuasia 2015 logo places of innovation corporate partnerships martin pasquier innovation is everywhere\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Attendees came from existing or upcoming coworking spaces, such as <a title=\"Colab Philippines coworking spaces\" href=\"http:\/\/colab.ph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colab<\/a> (Philippines), <a title=\"1961 cambodia coworking\" href=\"http:\/\/www.the1961.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1961<\/a> and <a title=\"Angkor Hub coworking space\" href=\"http:\/\/www.angkorhub.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AngkorHub<\/a> (Cambodia), <a title=\"Hub Dhaka coworking\" href=\"http:\/\/hubdhaka.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hub Dhaka<\/a> (Bangladesh), <a title=\"Mingle Mumbai coworking\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tomingle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mingle<\/a> (Mumbai, India), <a title=\"KoHub Koh Lantah\" href=\"http:\/\/kohub.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KoHub<\/a> (Koh Lantah, Thailand), <a title=\"Magic malaysia startup\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mymagic.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MAGIC<\/a> (Malaysia) and an amazing gang from Bandung, Indonesia, which included <a title=\"Co and co space bandung\" href=\"http:\/\/coandcospace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Co &amp; Co<\/a>, <a title=\"Kolaborasi Bandung coworking\" href=\"http:\/\/kolaborasi.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kolaborasi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Special mention to the attendees from <a title=\"Aldeia Coworking\" href=\"http:\/\/aldeiaco.com.br\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aldeia Coworking<\/a> (Brazil), <a title=\"Coconat Berlin\" href=\"http:\/\/coconat-space.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coconat<\/a> (Berlin, Germany) and <a title=\"Avatech\" href=\"http:\/\/avatech.ir\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Avatech<\/a> (Iran) for the long trip to Bali!<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j2bvI5ao18c\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It was both the opportunity to get a better understanding of <strong>what the coworking culture is, and how it fits into the broader picture of the future of work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Welcome to a smaller world governed by the power of many<\/h2>\n<p>As Grace Sai, co-founder of The Hub Singapore, shared in her introductory keynote, <em><strong>\u201ctechnology and budget airlines have made the world smaller<\/strong>. As a result, <strong>there is more consciousness in the world<\/strong>. The current generation of leaders and doers are reversing the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, aiming to self-actualize first and leaving a legacy from a young age\u00a0\u00bb.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1992\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/future-of-work-wrap-up-coworking-unconference-asia-2015-coworking-spaces-stats-2012-2015-number-of-coworking-2.png\" alt=\"future of work wrap up coworking unconference asia 2015 coworking spaces stats 2012 2015 number of coworking\" width=\"509\" height=\"513\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Study from the late DeskWanted (data from 2011)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Companies need to integrate this reality, and <strong>coworking spaces are where this redefinition and recreation is made possible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Brad Krauskopf\u00a0from Hub Australia added this amazing figure, that today,<em><strong> \u00ab\u00a0only 7% of the generation Y, born between 1980 and 2000 (they&rsquo;re also called Millennials) is willing to work for a Fortune 500 company<\/strong>. By 2025, they will account for 75% of the workforce.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If a recurring topic of the conference was how coworking spaces could strike partnerships with corporates to be financially more sustainable, it\u2019s fair to add that <strong>how coworking spaces could help corporates adapt<\/strong> to the future of work was as relevant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1993\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/coworking-space-asia-coworking-unconference-bali-hubud-cuasia-2015-logo-places-of-innovation-corporate-partnerships-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-6-2.jpg\" alt=\"coworking space asia coworking unconference bali hubud cuasia 2015 logo places of innovation corporate partnerships martin pasquier innovation is everywhere 6\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Unconference: participants choose their topics, discuss them and try to find solutions<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Coworking spaces have already begun to host part of the <strong>outsourced innovation from large companies<\/strong>. At the Hub Singapore, over two years, about <strong>70 CEOs, mayors and ministers paid a visit<\/strong> to learn how to innovate faster through the help of collaborative communities.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers hinted that the<strong> financial dilemma<\/strong> of most coworking spaces, who struggle to break even as their community are as growing as they are volatile (hence, creative), <strong>could be solved by governments and corporates paying more for the precious, innovative and cohesive matter<\/strong> coworking spaces are producing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Prototyping in the city, and beyond?<\/h2>\n<p>The future of work and the role of coworking spaces would also have an impact on the way <strong>the public sector work,<\/strong> or rather, the way it shows limitation in an age of technology, transparency and mobility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1994\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/tishirt-coworking-space-asia-coworking-unconference-bali-hubud-cuasia-2015-logo-places-of-innovation-corporate-partnerships-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywhere-final-2.png\" alt=\"tishirt coworking space asia coworking unconference bali hubud cuasia 2015 logo places of innovation corporate partnerships martin pasquier innovation is everywhere final\" width=\"640\" height=\"279\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Thought leaders with some style at the Coworking Unconference Asia 2015<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Coworking spaces, their collaborative culture and their mindset of impacting their environment positively are <strong>an alternative to government owned or powered community centres, youth centres and other programs<\/strong> designed to produce more of the cohesive glue individual-centric societies tend to lose over time.<\/p>\n<p>A few examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Hub Australia in Melbourne is partnering with PWC and the Government of South-Australia to fund $5K worth of space + mentoring of young, local <a title=\"Hub Australia Sparks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hubaustralia.com\/spark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201csparks\u201d<\/a> <\/strong>so that they can create their own job and company and not leaving the vicinity in a form of brain drain. So far, 75% of the sparks have been<\/li>\n<li><strong><a title=\"Tribe Wanted\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tribewanted.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tribe Wanted<\/a> <\/strong>in the UK <strong>helps burnt-out managers and corporates to retrieve energy and taste for life through retreats and collaborative programs<\/strong>, such as camps with no technology in forested areas of the UK or abroad.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a title=\"Cowerks New Jerseay\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cowerking.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cowerks<\/a>,<\/strong> based on the New Jersey seashore at Asbury Park, getting <strong><a title=\"Cowerks funding\" href=\"http:\/\/asburyparksun.com\/cowerks-wins-240k-in-funds-for-expansion-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$240k funding<\/a><\/strong> from the state Economic Development Authority. The investment will go both to an expansion of the spaces and of the programs: <em>\u00ab\u00a0<strong>As literacy in computer science and programming quickly becomes a basic requirement for tomorrow\u2019s workforce, enrichment programs for young individuals is the surest way to make certain this core competency is met\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/em><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1995\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/hub-australia-spark-program-innovation-is-everywhere-coworking-unconference-asia-2015-2.jpeg\" alt=\"hub australia spark program innovation is everywhere coworking unconference asia 2015\" width=\"640\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Spark program at Hub Australia<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell, coworking spaces and community powered entities are now able to help solve local issues which government should solve, but may not have the agility, the resources and the political will to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of this trend with the new set of skills and attitudes our digital, mobile and fast economies require makes really sense, and offer to coworking spaces more than a legitimacy, with possibly a business model.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>From the community to the company and the city: coworking spaces must go outside their boundaries<\/h2>\n<p>To do so, <a title=\"Alex Hillman communities\" href=\"http:\/\/dangerouslyawesome.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Hillman<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">,<\/span> a community builder managing one of the best resource blog on this topic, suggested in a live Hangout from Philadelphia that <strong>coworking spaces, after having built a first solid base of community, ought to go the vast world, and outside their own comfort zone<\/strong> &#8211; the space they typically own and manage.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>coworking culture<\/strong> is still pretty new (the concept itself would have been crafted around 2005), and for newcomers from the corporate and government world, the spaces they grow is far from their skyscrapers, headquarters, cabinets and forums.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1997\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/greenschool-bali-cuasia-2015-coworking-unconference-hubud-innovation-places-south-east-asia-education-martin-pasquier-innovation-is-everywere-alex-hillman-2.jpg\" alt=\"greenschool bali cuasia 2015 coworking unconference hubud innovation places south-east asia education martin pasquier innovation is everywere alex hillman\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Chatting with coworking god Alex Hillman under Bali&rsquo;s Green School bamboo \u00ab\u00a0town hall\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Alex Hillman made it clear: <em>\u201cDon\u2019t try to get the corporates into your collaborative workspace, <strong>focus on where people are and help them create a new experience in their own place<\/strong>.
