GSY: World’s brightest young minds gather to innovate<\/h2>\n

The\u00a04th Global Entrepreneurship Summit<\/a>, which took place in Kuala Lumpur, was complemented by a host of other events to gather the many stakeholders of an innovation ecosystem. One of these events was\u00a0Global Startup Youth<\/a><\/strong>, a 3-day program involving about\u00a0500 youths aged 18-25 from 105 countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It was organized by\u00a0Startup Malaysia<\/strong>\u00a0with the help of\u00a0UP Global<\/strong>\u00a0and Startup Nations, and with the financial support of the US State Department. The 500 young leaders were selected based on an application submitted by\u00a0Malaysians (250 places)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0all other nationalities taking part\u00a0(250 places too). During the GSY, they had to tackle 4 key issues listed under the\u00a0UN’s Millennium Goals<\/a>. \u00a0The top finalists then got their minute of fame at the closing ceremony of the GES to present their ideas.<\/p>\n

Quite an agenda<\/p><\/div>\n

Marion Desmazi\u00e8res<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0both a\u00a0delegate to GSY from Canada<\/strong>, where she’s doing her MBA, and\u00a0a community builder<\/strong>\u00a0as she has been helping UP Global to run their famous Startup Weekends in English and French speaking countries, in North America, Europe and Africa. She was also\u00a0a curator<\/strong>\u00a0for Startup Digest, another brick of UP Global’s ecosystem of collaborative tools which aims to provide local communities with an updated calendar of key tech events.\u00a0She identifies herself as a connector<\/strong>\u00a0and as such had been introduced to our team by\u00a0several different\u00a0contacts.<\/p>\n

For Marion, this first GSY is like\u00a0a shorter version of a Startup Weekend<\/strong>\u00a0(with about\u00a020h of work<\/strong>\u00a0– mentoring, presentations and networking time for the youth as opposed to 54h for the typical startup weekend).<\/p>\n

The teams were grouped\u00a0by the organizers to mix their skills and nationalities<\/strong>\u00a0so as to accelerate disruption and innovative ideas. In her group, Marion found herself to be among the oldest, and found it\u00a0challenging to \u00ab\u00a0manage\u00a0\u00bb a group of participants\u00a0aged 19-20 <\/strong>(attendees to Startup Weekends are usually slightly more experienced, sometimes arriving as an existing team willing to test a new feature or meet with mentors).\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0They sometimes don’t have this mindset of \u00ab\u00a0getting shit done\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n

How to build an innovation ecosystem bottom-up?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Marion also explains how\u00a0UP Global\u00a0<\/a>is like a\u00a0three-storey rocket<\/strong>\u00a0that facilitates\u00a0entrepreneurship<\/strong>\u00a0from the field level.<\/p>\n

  1. First, with\u00a0Startup Weekend<\/strong><\/a>, they have been instrumental in providing both a\u00a0training ground<\/strong>\u00a0for aspiring entrepreneurs and a\u00a0meeting point<\/strong>\u00a0for the rest of the startup ecosystem (mentors, VCs and investors, tech brands which sponsor the venue and organization, jury, speakers\u2026).<\/li>\n
  2. Then, with\u00a0Next<\/a><\/strong>, UP Global provides a\u00a0pre-incubation<\/strong>\u00a0stage for successful startup weekenders willing to go further with their teams, with a\u00a05-week, part-time access to mentors and a roadmap<\/strong>\u00a0to go from customer discovery to fundability and eventually market entry. The program is under the guidance of\u00a0Steve Blank<\/a>, a serial entrepreneur now teaching at Stanford.<\/li>\n
  3. Finally, as it was officially announced during the 4th GES, a\u00a0new\u00a0partnership<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0will now associate UP global and the US State Department to provide\u00a0500 000 entrepreneurs in 1 000 cities<\/strong>\u00a0with advanced access to mentorship and investors. Startup Weekend, the core program of UP Global, has already joined forces\u00a0with Startup America in\u00a0May 2013<\/a>, one of Obama’s answers to the financial crisis aimed at fostering entrepreneurial communities in the country (Thanks Marion for the correction!).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Well, I spied on 40 teams pitching their projects in KL<\/p><\/div>\n

    Back at GSY, you can really feel\u00a0how all the parts of the startup ecosystems are efficiently gathered,<\/strong>\u00a0and how inspiring and energizing the 500 youths are, with large smiles and a disarming ease meeting complete strangers within Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s corridors and rooms.<\/p>\n

    A Milestone for \u00ab\u00a0Milestone\u00a0\u00bb, the winning team at Global Startup Youth 2013<\/h2>\n

    At the end of the day, the\u00a0winning team<\/strong>\u00a0among the 40-ish competing delivered an\u00a0almost perfect pitch<\/strong>\u00a0in the impressive plenary hall of the convention center. A team of 9, with several of them taking the mic without any flaw, offered a website\/app called\u00a0Milestone<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>It helps\u00a0young people who do not know how to turn their dreams into reality.<\/p>\n

    Milestone helps anyone\u00a0find people with\u00a0relevant skills within his\/her\u00a0LinkedIn extended network.\u00a0<\/strong>Then, Milestone turns into a\u00a0personal CRM <\/strong>by\u00a0facilitating the acquaintance, keeping the conversation engaging and helping to maintain progress step by step in the fast-paced and sometimes volatile environment of social networks.<\/p>\n

    All winners will go to the Silicon Valley<\/strong>\u00a0to further their projects, thanks to both the GSY organization, which offered 3 seats, and a VC from Intellectual Ventures who attended the pitch and decided to pay for the tickets for the rest of the team.<\/p>\n

    This was the first ever Global Youth Startup organized by Startup Malaysia and its dynamic founder,\u00a0Dash Dhakshinamoorthy<\/a>. This proves\u00a0how both youth and diversity are key drivers for innovation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
