Our project and mission in Kuala Lumpur is to\u00a0learn how innovation ecosystems work all over the world,<\/strong>\u00a0starting in year #1 with by<\/strong>\u00a0visiting 10 countries over the next 10 months<\/strong>\u00a0during their key events. We had covered our first ecosystem while attending\u00a0Austin’s SXSW<\/a>\u00a0back in March 2013. We talked about a crowd funding campaign, tons of contents, contacts, trends & workshops back in France and Singapore where we are based.<\/p>\n

A Fresh Perspective on Startup Ecosystems<\/h2>\n

A refreshing debate we heard at the\u00a0Global Entrepreneurship Summit<\/a>\u00a0in Kuala Lumpur was about how to\u00a0connect innovation ecosystems.<\/strong>\u00a0Much of the conversation on ecosystems before this summit focused on\u00a0comparing<\/strong>\u00a0cities based on various metrics measuring their creative, financial and talent potential.<\/p>\n

A famous ranking in the tech community: the Startup Genome<\/p><\/div>\n

This year, a report called\u00a0Startup Genome<\/a>\u00a0offered a\u00a0ranking of the top 20 startup hubs<\/strong>. Other consultancies such as Solidiance did the same kind of assessment, though on a broader number of topics, for\u00a0top creative cities in Asia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other reports try to\u00a0analyze facts, key people, stats and startups of each ecosystem,<\/strong>\u00a0without much comparison. This is the case for the\u00a0World Startup Report<\/a>, the result of a\u00a09-month trip<\/strong>\u00a0by Bowei Gai in 26 countries.<\/p>\n

Panelists as well as audiences at the GES 2013 often felt\u00a0the question was not so much about competing ecosystems (and rankings), but how to\u00a0connect\u00a0ecosystems which badly need one another.<\/strong>\u00a0Our project is rooted in this belief.<\/strong>\u00a0We feel innovation ecosystems across the world, from Paris to Singapore, are often isolated\u00a0(as a result, very few startups even think of international expansion).<\/p>\n

Connecting ecosystems, rather than making them compete against one another<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Ideas and projects don’t need visas, know no borders\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>\u00a0said a Silicon Valley veteran in the audience, which means startups should not think of which ecosystem to start in, but rather\u00a0how to connect with the other ones to kickstart their necessary global expansion.<\/strong>\u00a0Silicon Valley is also a place of ecosystems (note the plural form). Startups and projects in Sunnyvale or Palo Alto live in different smaller ecosystems, but the Valley makes connections easy and possible.<\/p>\n

The impossibility of comparing diverse ecosystems<\/h2>\n

Others stressed that\u00a0comparing ecosystems is like comparing apples and oranges<\/strong>. From a US point of view, talking about \u00ab\u00a0Asia\u00a0\u00bb as a whole might make sense. But when you live in Bangkok or Hong-Kong, you know that all the countries of the region are completely different in terms of its societies, cultures, history of technology etc.<\/p>\n

sinTherefore,\u00a0Malaysia should not \u00ab\u00a0compete\u00a0\u00bb against Singapore<\/strong>\u00a0to achieve the title of \u00ab\u00a0best South-East Asian innovation ecosystem\u00a0\u00bb. The two countries are so distinct that comparing based on arbitrary metrics provides little value.\u00a0Instead,\u00a0<\/strong>Malaysia should work with Singapore, <\/strong>capitalising on its global reach and\u00a0platform for mobility.<\/p>\n

South East Asia: 600 million consumers and a huge diversity<\/p><\/div>\n

In the end, many agreed that competition between ecosystems was not something that benefited startups, the \u00ab\u00a0end user\u00a0\u00bb of ecosystems. Rather, says\u00a0Nazrin Hassan<\/a>\u00a0from the Cradle Fund and a previous government agency employee in Malaysia,\u00a0we need to find a way to increase mobility of talent, money, and projects across innovation ecosystems<\/strong>. This is what we’re starting to do with our project, a new media and community experiment which documents alternative ecosystems to the Valley and connects them through events, hangouts and content.<\/p>\n
