{"id":1012,"date":"2014-08-17T15:34:37","date_gmt":"2014-08-17T07:34:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/?p=1012"},"modified":"2014-08-17T15:34:37","modified_gmt":"2014-08-17T07:34:37","slug":"corporate-innovation-series-1-general-electric-ge-garage-lagos-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innovationiseverywhere.com\/fr\/corporate-innovation-series-1-general-electric-ge-garage-lagos-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporate innovation series #1: GE Garage in Lagos, Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1015 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/GE-Garage-general-electric-innovation-strategy-africa-nigeria-lagos-fablab-corporate-innovation-startups-emerging-markets-innovation-is-everywhere-2-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"GE Garage general electric innovation strategy africa nigeria lagos fablab corporate innovation startups emerging markets innovation is everywhere 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" \/>What <strong>General Electric<\/strong> is doing in Nigeria with its <strong><a title=\"GE Garage Nigeria\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gegarages.com\/global-tour\/lagos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GE Garage<\/a> <\/strong>is not your typical corporate accelerator or even makerspace.<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s not an incubator, in the sense that there is no funding for younger entrepreneurs or a stake from GE in a startup&rsquo;s equity. <strong>It&rsquo;s more like an open Fablab<\/strong>, with GE employees around to help anyone coming here to make and do whatever their project is.<\/p>\n<p>The main objective of the GE Garage is to <strong>increase the employability of the local workforce through training on new manufacturing and production technology,<\/strong> and, of course, foster a spirit of entrepreneurship. Training will also include leadership development, software programming and business planning, all related to the Lagos market.<\/p>\n<p>The strategic interest for GE is obvious. If, a few years ago, CEO Jeff Immelt told shareholders <strong>Africa<\/strong> was <em>\u00ab\u00a0off-radar\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>, in the latest annual report, he calls the continent <em>\u00ab\u00a0a new frontier\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> for the group, with the possibility in near future that<em> \u00ab\u00a0more gas turbines would be sold in Africa than in the US on a yearly basis\u00a0\u00bb <\/em>(<a title=\"General Electric Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/4805778a-8a65-11e2-bf79-00144feabdc0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/GE-Garage-general-electric-innovation-strategy-africa-nigeria-lagos-fablab-corporate-innovation-startups-emerging-markets-innovation-is-everywhere-1-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1018\" src=\"http:\/\/innovao.cluster030.hosting.ovh.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/GE-Garage-general-electric-innovation-strategy-africa-nigeria-lagos-fablab-corporate-innovation-startups-emerging-markets-innovation-is-everywhere-1-3.jpg\" alt=\"GE Garage general electric innovation strategy africa nigeria lagos fablab corporate innovation startups emerging markets innovation is everywhere 1\" width=\"640\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Power is a big issue in Africa&rsquo;s most populous country<\/strong>, with power cuts being a given (and oil-powered generator a luxury, although a pollutant one). As we saw in <a title=\"Nigeria startup report\" href=\"www.www.innovationiseverywhere.com\/nigeria-startup-scene-can-africas-india-make\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our Nigeria startup ecosystem report<\/a>, the cost of infrastructure is one of the main obstacles entrepreneurs are facing.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>GE Garage in Lagos, Nigeria: a place to increase the employability of the local workforce<\/h2>\n<p>We had a discussion with Osagie Ogunbor, Communications Manager for General Electric West Africa, and asked their team a few questions about the GE Garage<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Innovation is Everywhere &#8211; When did GE decide to open its series of Garages, and what place does it take for them in\u00a0the broader link they build with innovation outside the group (e.g. other companies have\u00a0incubators, etc.)? What is then the opportunity to open such a space in Africa, and why, in\u00a0Africa, did you decide for Nigeria, and then why Lagos?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The decision to extend GE Garages to Nigeria was taken in January this year during the visit of\u00a0our global Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt. This is also part of a global plan to take the Garages\u00a0experience beyond the U.S and make it global. Nigeria just happens to be one of the first\u00a0locations outside of the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>With each stop, the garage will be tailored to meet local needs, and\u00a0continue building on the great ideas and learnings from previous cities. What do you provide? do people need to register, pay for a plan? Also, what\u00a0differences will there be with the other garages already existing, such as in DC? Is there\u00a0Africa or Nigeria specific activities in the garage you&rsquo;re going to set up?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>From June 23 to July 14, 2014, Garages will activate in Lagos, Nigeria at GE\u2019s regional\u00a0headquarters. The Garages program will expand on past successes by evolving into a long-term\u00a0program dedicated to training skilled, employable workers and creating employment\u00a0opportunities amongst service suppliers within the Power Generation sector.<\/p>\n<p>This three week brand-building activity is designed to lead into to the launch of a long-term skills\u00a0training program in Nigeria. Together, the short-term activation and long-term program serve as\u00a0a model which can be replicated across emerging markets and be expanded to address\u00a0subsequent sectors around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>We are working with targeted groups that will find the Garages experience relevant and quite\u00a0useful. This includes Innovation and co-creation hubs, the techy community, educational\u00a0institutions etc. Yes participants will register but no form of prayer is required.\u00a0There are also industry-specific Nigeria thought leadership activities spanning Healthcare Power\u00a0as well as the Oil and Gas industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Innovation is Everywhere &#8211;\u00a0I seem to understand you want with the Garage to increase the employability of local\u00a0people. Is this an objective? What else do you do this for? What do GE gain from this? Do\u00a0you have a way to assess a ROI or a return for this type of project at the group level\u00a0(country or worldwide?)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We do hope that the garage experience will help improve employability of local people. Our\u00a0target is to establish an employable base of skilled workers in Nigeria by teaching skills that have\u00a0application in the fastest growing industries. Do you intend to send people from the Garages\u00a0at some point in branches of the group?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the help of GE Foundation partner Points of Light, GE plans to activate the 400+ employees\u00a0in Nigeria, as well as the global African American Forum within GE. Together, we\u2019ll create a\u00a0network of mentors, coaches and teachers, and help each other grow the future of Power\u00a0Generation and Healthcare in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>These programs complement the breadth of skill-building\u00a0underway through the GE Foundation\u2019s Developing Health Globally program, including nurse<br \/>\nanesthetists training, bio-medical engineering training and other advanced employable skills\u00a0training programs.<\/p>\n<p>The Garages Nigeria program will serve as a model which can be replicated across\u00a0emerging markets and be expanded to address subsequent sectors around the globe.\u00a0With each stop, the Garage will be tailored to meet local needs, and continue building on\u00a0the learnings from previous cities. Through its expansion, Garages will foster a culture of\u00a0collaboration in each market, across GE, and makers and entrepreneurs around the\u00a0world.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>GE Garage is itself built within an ecosystem of actors in innovation and human resources<\/h2>\n<p>GE Garage will invite guest speakers to broaden the horizons and skills of the local teams. To run the garage, GE partnered with the <a title=\"Dangote General Electric\" href=\"http:\/\/dangote.com\/touchinglives.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dangote Foundation<\/a> (see article from <a title=\"Dangote Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201405090934.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All Africa<\/a>), a local NGO promoting social and economic transformation through education among others.
